Rita Dove, the American poet and essayist, once said, “Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.” With this in mind I decided to be truly original and write a poem about resolutions.
So it begins.
Happy New Year! And so it begins.
The countdown is finished with a kiss, drink or grin.
We shed the bad days of the year that’s passed by,
watching, eyes wide, bursts of lights in night skies.
Heads tilted upwards, and laughter increasing,
2017 is here! The applause and the cheering.
Perhaps this New Year can wipe clean the slate.
Give us all a chance to start fresh, live our fate.
But not leave things to chance, strive to make things happen.
Leave our happiness in our own hands, aware of thought patterns.
Maybe we can discard the mistakes like a snake,
shedding it’s skin, as it slithers away.
Though that would be nice, we can’t live in denial,
we must claim our decisions, live with them for a while.
No need to self-punish, life doesn’t have to be hell,
the whole point is to learn, from the world, from yourself.
Resolutions can be made any day of the year
Yes, you could say we’re all starting anew,
but if you think it’s now or next year, you’ve been greatly fooled.
For you can start new every morning you wake,
you don’t need to wait for a calendar date.
Every brand new decision, every forward motion,
no matter how small, is a self-made promotion.
But since it is the time for such celebrations,
will you be making some changes to your current motivations?
What resolutions are you aiming to make?
What resolutions are you aiming to make?
As the New Year sets sail, 2016 in it’s wake.
I know of a few, that would make matters better.
For ever single person that’s reading this letter.
Before I begin, take a moment to ponder, on this year that’s now gone,
On the past that’s now older.
How much you have changed, in your ways and ideas,
your perspective of things, to the approach of your fears.
There’s nothing like reflection, to help us learn truly,
view the past as it was, whether tame or unruly.
It’s been a full chapter, 365 pages long.
In a book that cares not whether it veers right, or steers wrong.
The book of life, you see, cannot be re-written.
Though we can use it to study our behaviours, and forgive them.
To give ourselves the opportunity for a chance at self-improvement.
To love ourselves, and heal ourselves, create our own movement.
Resolution number one, that comes fast to fruition
“Use my breath to centre myself, and take control of what’s within.”
Once we can overcome that which doesn’t serve us,
like guilt or shame or arrogance, or situations that make us nervous.
We can focus that energy, into a place that brings us grace,
like gratefulness and hopefulness and a plan for something great.
“I will put my health before my desires.”
Is the second to be listed, for this is a vow that transpires, and keeps us uplifted.
There’s so many habits that take away from our vitality,
Some are so harmful they end up fast-tracking us to fatality.
The third resolution that I’d like to share, is easy enough, if we dare to care:
“Be more empathetic” of the beings around us.
Don’t get so agitated, for they all carry hard stuff.
That stuff we all have, whether it’s grief or despair,
a list that’s miles long, that they may never share.
It’s so easy for us to make sassy snap judgements.
Or write someone off for a way in which they’ve wronged us.
And that’s not to say to let destructive people in,
nor forgive them entirely for some terrible sin.
Just bare in mind, we’re all part of this package,
the madness of life and the realities that wrap it.
This year, let’s remember, to keep things polite, because rudeness is lame,
and we’ve all been through shite.
