Hand sanitisers are one of those essential hand bag must-haves. For those who don’t carry a hand bag, keeping a disinfecting gel or pack of antibacterial wipes in your car or travel bag keeps you prepared. Whether you’ve cut yourself and need a quick clean-up, or have exited a bathroom stall to find there’s no soap in the dispenser, or, if you’ve got my luck, managed to touch something very disgusting and don’t have running water on hand, sanitisers can really save the day.
Personally, I didn’t start carrying hand sanitisers around with me religiously until I got a dog who’s sole life purpose was scouting out rotting dead animals and excrement to roll in. She’s a hunting dog, so it’s her absolute favourite cologne to wear. Needless to say, I’ve spent many a time wiping down her coat, my hands and anything else she managed to touch in the process. After a few good years of this, and after my introduction to a more holistic lifestyle, I naturally started to worry about all the harsh chemicals these products contained.
Since I used hand sanitisers fairly often, not just on the dog, but on myself and others for various reasons, it was time to go holistic. As it happened, my dear Godmother Kitty had her own recipe for a safe sanitiser that she swore by. Being trained in aromatherapy myself, and knowing all the wonderful benefits of essential oils, I was delighted to discover that the recipe featured my favourite ones.
Here on our blog spot, we’ve recently indulged in sharing some delicious recipes passed down by Godmother Kitty in an ongoing feature we’ve branded “The Kitty Chronicles.” Our most recent post featured the most scrumptious home-made granola I’ve ever encountered, which had the kitchen smelling like heaven. See that recipe here. We also tried this nutrient-packed, surprisingly simple and fantastically filling flour-free bread. See that recipe here.
This will now be the third segment of The Kitty Chronicles, which is keeping with the recipe theme, but is certainly not edible. It is however, healthy for skin and effective at protecting against harmful virus’s, fungus and bacteria. The ingredients possess both healing and moisturising qualities, and keep the skins valuable acid mantle intact. With just four ingredients, this DIY concoction is quick and easy to create, smells great, and most importantly, lacks all the nasty chemicals present in most hand sanitisers.
Kitty’s All-Natural Hand Santiser
What you will need:
- A small, airtight plastic bottle suitable for travel
- 1/2 cup Aloe Vera Gel.
- 10 drops Lavender essential oil
- 8 drops Cinnamon essential oil
- 10 drops Tea Tree essential oil
To make the mixture, simply add all ingredients directly into the bottle(s), starting with the aloe vera gel, and shake well.
Shake before each use. We recommend finding an all-natural product which is cruelty free and safe for kids, such as the Green Leaf Naturale brand. (though any brand will work). To keep the chemicals on the safe side, look for labels which include: “Free from parabens, petrochemicals, dyes and alcohol.”
