Everyone has their own opinion of what inner strength is, but what’s the true meaning?
Literally, it can be defined as: Integrity of character; resoluteness of will; mental resistance to doubt. So if we have all of these qualities at all times, then we have inner strength.
But what happens when we lose sight of our inner strength? How do we know if we are ultimately strong? And if we are ultimately strong, why do we often feel so weak?
The reality is that everybody is dealing with their own struggles and fighting their own battles. Sometimes we conquer, and the victory is sweet, but when we become defeated, the negativity chips away at our confidence and our view of the world changes for the worst. In those dark moments, if we don’t muster every ounce of hope we have to get us back on track, we end up losing.
Go within every day and find inner strength so that the world will not blow your candle out.
– Katherine Dunham
I caught up with 25 year old military specialist, German Garcia, an old friend who is soon going on active duty. His job description requires strength in every sense of the word. When I asked what inner strength meant to him, he responded:
“To me, Inner strength is the ability to be courageous. Your courage is your inner strength. It’s something you’re always looking for within, and it’s something you have to summon on a daily basis whether you’re about to go into a war zone or face another “ordinary” day. I think everybody has their weaknesses, nobody is entirely free from fear. We all depend on our inner strength to overcome our fears and failures, no matter what we do in life. We need to believe in our capabilities in order to trust ourselves.”
He continued, “In my line of work, you can’t hesitate or second guess yourself, that’s dangerous business. You have to breathe deeply, remain calm and steady. You have to believe in your capabilities. Whatever you’re doing, you’re doing it from a place of strength. You have to push through even though you could easily go into shock, or become overwhelmed with emotions that don’t serve you.”
His words rang sharp and true, especially coming from someone who has had their fair share of struggles in life. That’s just it! Most everybody has had their fair share of struggles, whether it’s their own inner demons or their surroundings and circumstances causing pain, strife or hopelessness. When it comes to inner strength, we’re dealing with a level playing field.
We all have the capability to search within and find the inner strength which keeps us moving forward. Hell, if we can’t find it, we have to create it! We mustn’t lose sight of that, we must never lose the beauty which is our inner light. For as long as you have a flame within you, however small, you will have light. You will carry the potential to turn that flame into a furnace.
The most powerful weapon on earth, is the human soul on fire.
