“Whatever the mind can conceive, and believe, it can achieve.”
Napoleon Hill
What is dowsing? Simplified.
To dowse is to search with the aid of simple tools. What can be found is resources and valuable information which are otherwise undetectable through the other senses such as sight, hearing, smell and touch. Commonly, dowsing is associated with searching for underground water, but it also can be used to find missing items, people, archaeological remains, tunnels, oil and more.
Holistic dowsing, or healing dowsing, is thought of by some as possessing “Extra sensory perception.” A sixth sense if you will. Many think that the early stages of mankind were able to survive such a hostile environment because of this sense. This would be the same sense responsible for allowing animals to detect an oncoming earth quake. Taking the beautiful Monarch butterfly as an example of this sensory phenomenon, we can discover what seems like magic.
“The great great grandchildren of the Monarch butterfly may use electromagnetic sensing in order to find their way back to the place of their Ancestors’ birth. But it does not account for how they knew that it was what they were intended to do three generations later, for the survival of the species. The Monarch butterflies are accessing information about (or from) a different time and a different place. The precedent is set by Mother Nature herself. Information about a different time, and a different environment, is available to the Monarch butterfly.”

We love this definition from the Angelic Holistic Practice: “Dowsing is method of ‘energetic analysis’ and ‘energetic balancing’ that allows the dowser to find answers to questions by accessing the ‘informational fields’ outside human perception, which can then work alongside our five physical senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste) which on their own do not always provide the answers we are looking for. The dowser is bringing information from the unconscious / subconscious into the conscious. The dowser is looking to find the ‘root cause’ or the underlying cause of their clients health condition.”
That gut feeling
In humans, you could call it pure intuition, but there are tools or “instruments” that can be used to work as an antenna / guide. Usually, a pendulum or a rod is utilised, called “pendulum dowsing” or “rod dowsing.” Theoretically, every animal has this sense, although somewhere along the way, and through an-ever modernising society, a lot of humans seem to have lost it. However, it is never lost for good, most of us experience those ”gut feelings” at some point or another. Instead, what is lost is the ability to gain access to it.
This gut feeling is not obsolete in anyone, and through education and perseverance, you can bring it back to the forefront of your being. It is a natural ability which can be fine-tuned and exercised like a muscle. It’s interesting to observe that young children often demonstrate a natural flair for it, which is unsurprising, considering how much closer they are to their basic instincts, unhindered perception and wonderfully active brains.
There is a scientific explanation for everything, even if mainstream science has not yet figured it out. To some people, what has not yet been scientifically proven remains just a myth. To others, their own experiences and knowledge of certain events lead them to think otherwise. In the case of dowsing, this rings true. “Like bees unaware they are too aerodynamically challenged to fly, dowsers don’t let the skeptics get them down. In fact, the ranks of dowsers have been steadily growing. Forty years ago, about 50 dowsers and curiosity seekers were drawn to Danville, Vt., for a 1-day National Dowsing Convention. That get-together led to the creation of the American Society of Dowsers (ASD), which now counts about 4200 members.” – Popular Mechanics (1998 issue)
