I began changing my life just over two years ago, and boy what changes I have made!
My son was diagnosed with a muscle wasting disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy just before his second birthday and the future looked very bleak as I was told that he would have a shortened life and would not live much past the age of twenty. I really didn’t want him to be reliant on conventional healthcare (though there are many points at which we have to be) but wanted to be able to treat him at home as much as I could. I decided that it was time to make some changes to my life and started to look at alternatives in many areas. Just a couple of short months after we had received his diagnosis, I found the School of Natural Health Sciences website, full to the brim with amazing courses that would not only enable me to help my son, but to help many others too.
I had never been happy in my job as a sales manager, I felt drained and tired everyday and the stress it placed on me and my family was unbearable, so during one of those epiphany moments, I quit and decided to follow my heart by enrolling on the basic Herbalism course with the school. I also decided to take my Reiki degree one training at the same time and I haven’t looked back since. I passed the SNHS Herbalism course in February 2006 and completed Reiki degree two at around the same time. I had already noticed changes in myself, I had become more confident, happier with who I was and my life in general. I started to make other changes too and decided that I could make a success of myself through the new training I had been doing.
I opened my business, Sagittarius Holistic Health, in June 2006, practicing Reiki and Herbalism. The going was slow at first but soon people were hearing about me and starting to come for the help and healing they needed. Seeing people get better in one way or another is reward enough for what I do and finally I had found a way to make a difference at the same time as being happy.
Unfortunately, my son (then four years old) went into hospital with a bad chest infection on New Year’s Eve last year and I had to rethink my situation. I could no longer run premises and look after my son as he needed me too. So I had a rethink and decided to become a mobile therapist. My business has gone from strength to strength over the last few months, as has my son thankfully. I have this year alone managed to complete courses with SNHS in Indian Head Massage and other courses including an ACHO Crystal Therapy course and completing my Reiki training with the final stage, Master/Teacher. I run a handful of small meditation groups and am currently part way through the SNHS Shiatsu course.
What about the future? Well, I do have some plans for the coming year, I look forward to completing the Shiatsu course with SNHS and also want to continue my training with the school by completing the Advanced Herbalism diploma and hopefully starting Aromatherapy and Reflexology. I am also looking forward to working with the school as a Reiki Master, helping them to carry on the good work of passing on knowledge to all those who wish to learn.
If you have ever wondered about working in holistic therapies, my advice is to follow your heart and gut instincts as I have, look over the School’s website and find something that you might enjoy, I did and I haven’t looked back since. I am now a happy, successful therapist who can help her own family at the same time as many others, and it’s all thanks to the help and support (not to mention great courses!) from SNHS I have had over the last couple of years.
