4 tips to help you manage studying online

Here at the School of Natural Health Sciences we respect everyone's way of studying, that's why we've incorporated two options into our school, self-study & tutored. Whichever you choose, these tips could really help you through your learning journey.

Classroom learning is a completely different experience than studying online. If you’re self-studying, 100% of the motivation, leadership and organisation has to come from you. This can sometimes prove to be tricky, especially with our already busy lives. If we have a tutor handy however, this can make things a hell of a lot easier. Here at The School of Natural Health Sciences we respect that not everyone wants to fly solo. For this reason, we come equipped with a team of qualified tutors to help you every step of the way.

We also respect those who like to study by themselves, and that’s why we’ve incorporated the two options in our school. If you’re undecided about which method is best for you, we’ve written an article covering the topic. Whether you choose tutored or self-study, these tips could help you through your learning journey, and we want you to have a good one!Studying online Tip Nº1

Make studying online part of your routine, not an extra task

Think about what your daily routine usually consists of. Pick a time of day that best suits a study session and PEN IT IN. Make it simple and stress-free by thinking of it just like any other part of your routine. If by chance, you can’t stick to the timing one or more times during the week, just move it around. You can reschedule as often as you want, as long as you make time for it at some point in the day.

If you make sure it’s penned in for every single day, even if it’s just half an hour, then it really will start becoming part of your routine. The great thing about studying online, is that you can be as flexible as you want to be. The issue starts to arise when procrastination or forgetfulness strikes. I like to set an alarm-reminder on my phone so that I never need to be concentrated on what I need to do next, and can relax with what I’m meant to be doing now.Studying online Tip Nº2

Earn your treats

Personally, I prefer to fit my studying time in for the evenings. Instead of watching more TV or doing the dishes, I’ll study. I think that’s a fair trade. I like to do about an hour a day, so, if I get that completed, I then reward myself with a glass of wine and a couple of After Eights :). Whatever method works best for you, whether you’re more suited to morning or afternoon studying, you can create a reward system catered to your own personal tastes.Studying online Tip Nº3

Keep a ‘What I Learned Today’ journal

It’s scientifically proven that physically writing things out helps you maintain and clarify a memory. Get a notepad, and after reading through your lessons, close the laptop (or minimise the window) and open up your physical notepad. Write down everything you can remember from the lesson. Pen to paper. When you’ve done that, read through the lesson one more time and see if you’ve missed out any major information.

Add to your notes any highlight-worthy sections. Now you can close the computer for good, read your notes out loud to brand the memory, and that’s your studying session completed and concluded for the day. Piece of cake! (Speaking of which… you will have earned a slice at this point!)

This journal will be a great tool to carry with you on-the-go so you can study at the bus stop, in waiting rooms, or at the beach! No electricity, wifi or valuable equipment necessary.Studying online Tip Nº4

Train your brain

Training your brain before, during, and after you embark upon your learning journey will increase your learning capabilities. Your mind will work more efficiently and give you access to information with ease and speed. Just like with a muscle, when we exercise it, it becomes more powerful.

There are many ways you can train your brain, but a quick and simple solution is with an app. We recently released a blog discussing brain-training and the available apps that have been helping us keep it up. We like to do a few minutes in the morning with a cuppa to help get our brains revved up for the day.
