Improve your overall wellness by incorporating Dr. Usui’s Reiki philosophies into your every day life – here’s how!
Reiki, as a natural therapy, has been a popular method of channeling energy since 1922 when it was developed in Japan. The premise was to create a system whereby we heal and promote wellness by having a blockage-free flow of energy. The philosophy behind the practice is less known than the physical therapy itself but implies the foundations and intentions of the healing method. To incorporate this into our lives would be to promote good energy and motivation with which to live by.
The precepts of Reiki invoke intentions which help us to live more in the present, keep us positive, and steer us away from fear, worry, anxiety and stress. It is a way to ground us, to re-centre and balance our minds, and all we need to do to achieve this is to simply recite the precepts and take them on as a reality.
The precepts (gokai) are as follows:
- Just for today (Kyo dake wa): Don’t get angry (Okoru na)
- Just for today (Kyo dake wa): Don’t worry (Shinpai su na)
- Just for today (Kyo dake wa): Be grateful (Kansha shite)
- Just for today (Kyo dake wa): Work diligently (Gyo wo hage me)
- Just for today (Kyo dake wa): Be kind to others (Hito ni shinsetsu ni)
Guiding our personal journey each day with these mindsets in place will gradually start to become automatic and allow us to live our lives with meaning. You could incorporate the Reiki precepts into your routine by using them as a mantra during meditation, or perhaps repeat them to yourself in bed in the morning as a way to wake up and start the day on a positive footing.
There are many ways in which this practice benefits us; for one, it gives us a way in which to live with intention. If we really engage with the Reiki precepts, and contemplate them deeply, we can create a framework for our feelings and beliefs as well as how we respond to life around us. Our actions and reactions are coming from a balanced, purposeful place.
The Reiki precepts offer the notion of living in the moment, they allow us to remain present as they suggest that we are inviting these feelings ‘just for today’. This keeps us centred and allows fulfilment to flow through us without yearning. The concept of the precepts allows us to take each moment as it comes and process life as it happens.
These principles encourage higher emotional vibrations elaborating that how we feel is our own choice, and we have the power over our emotions. We are not limited by our feelings, we are not bound to past experiences – we have the capacity to decide how we want to feel. Once we transcend and acknowledge this authority, we are far better equipped to manage our own inner peace.
The ‘gokai’, as the Reiki precepts are also known, elect a mental boundary which helps us to recognise and release the bad, whilst embracing the good. They represent a method by which we can reset our minds each day and programme ourselves to find peace and balance. They also serve to help us see ourselves more clearly.
During the day, have a listen to your heart and mind; ask yourself how you are doing. Check to see if you’re being present, find an awareness of your own feelings. As you repeat the precepts to yourself, search the meaning of each one in relation to your personal situation. Find out what each one means to you and contemplate how you are doing with them. Once we delve deep into the ideas we can establish ways by which to practice what we preach. We learn to live without ego, with validation and authenticity, allowing our actions to reflect our beliefs. We live empathetically, compassionately, and honestly with gratitude.
Reiki philosophy is a straightforward, uncomplicated way to live positively with meaning; it encourages us to educate ourselves, explore new ideas, accept the consequences of our experiences, and treat every moment as something from which we can grow.
