What really is karma?
“Every moment of your life, you perform action – physically, mentally, emotionally and energy-wise. Each action creates a certain memory. That is karma.” – Sadhguru
I took the following words from Deepak Chopra as he is a guru and seemed to sum it up so neatly; “Karma is a Sanskrit word that denotes the cycle of cause and effect, meaning each action a person takes in life will affect him or her at some point in the future. This rule also applies to a person’s thoughts and words”.
You have so much power in your life to create good and bad experiences based on your own words and actions. And while you probably try to do your best in any given moment, sometimes “your best” causes pain and heartache to another human being.
These feelings which you caused to manifest within another being will at some point in time be brought back to you by the universe and you, in turn, will experience the same level of pain or personal discomfort as you once inflicted on someone else. It may manifest in a different way but the level will apply.
Caitlin Morino, an expert in energy healing, describes karma as the universe’s judicial system. And in her experience, it’s more friend than foe; once you understand its purpose in your divine life plan. She sees karma manifest as fatigue, blocked energy, an overly dramatic relationship conflict, and curiously enough, a musty old smell. Life is an experience where you can create karmic debt or reward based on your actions, your intentions, and their consequences. In Buddhism, it’s called the cycle of samsara. If you reached a moment where all your karma was worked off, a Buddhist would describe this as enlightenment. They may also advise that this may take several lifetimes to achieve! But possible if you’re very conscious and very devoted to your spiritual path and extending your awareness and consciousness.
You can always create new karma. Karma is about intention, action, and the consequences of your action. It’s a combination of all of those things. The repercussion of your thoughts and actions.
So how do we cleanse our karma?
First and foremost we need to count our blessings, consistently. Be grateful for all your experiences whether they are positive or negative; all contribute to your greater self.
One certain way to avoid bad karma is to question your intentions. Why are you thinking or doing things in a certain way; what is motivating you? Therefore we need to think before we act. Ask yourself whether you are about to act out of love, and if you realise you are not, then rethink your actions until you shift to a more positive reaction. When questioning your motives, if you can ensure yourself that it comes from a place of love for yourself and for others, then it is coming from the right place.
Keep track of your position; if you are giving out negativity you will attract negativity. Practice random acts of kindness for the purpose of just passing on positivity and not for reward, compensation or reciprocation.
Take time out of your busy life to meditate and contemplate your self. Self-reflection is so important and allows us to recognise our actions, reactions, behaviour and study our intentions and emotions. As well as knowing ourselves we need to recognise that we can’t possibly know another person’s entire path and so we must refrain from judging them. Instead, develop empathy and compassion by trying to walk in someone else’s shoes.
The ultimate thing we can do to be able to achieve a karmic cleanse is to forgive. This can be the hardest thing to do at times, but it is vital for anyone to create good karma. Don’t accept negative energy or aggression or unkindness as concrete, you can dissipate it with love and kindness as opposed to adding to it with a negative reaction. And in turn create good karma for yourself. People can act out when under pressure or are suffering something difficult in their lives, so we have to recognise that the anger is nothing to do with us, to not allow it in, but to realise that the person directing it at you is the one who needs help. It is not you, it is them, so try and find empathy as opposed to defensiveness, or worse, matching their stance as a reaction. If you are going through a tough time it can happen that you take it out on someone else; this time it isn’t them, it is you, and you have to own it.
If we avoid feeding negativity it will not be allowed to grow. You, of course reserve the right to explain to another person that their words or actions are hurtful but this needs to be achieved in a neutral and calm manner. Perhaps not in the heat of the moment but later after some time of reflection. If the other person doesn’t care to listen or are not able to stop and walk away, they are just acting out the pain they have inside because they need a way to release it. You are not obligated to continue the cycle of pain and you have every right to protect yourself from toxic behaviour and energy. Sometimes the best response is to just remove yourself from the situation.
You will recognise a big shift in your life if you follow the steps above. If you surround your inner self with love and kindness and direct that out to all those around you, you will automatically feel a positive karmic difference in your life.
