They say there is a right way and a wrong way to do everything. Though this is true, the saying is silly, and that way of thinking can contribute to OCD tendencies. The truth is, there are many ‘right’ ways you can do something, and similarly, also many wrong ways. With most things in life, it’s finding what works for you. With that in mind, there are plenty of items around your household that you might never have known could be upgraded with a better storage solution.
Storage Solution Nº1
Your Yoga Mat
In the name of convenience, a lot of us tend to keep our yoga mat in the car, so we never forget it when heading to our next class. This isn’t the best situation for the materials in a yoga mat, which will break down and become brittle. If possible, keep your mat away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight as much as possible, and you might never have to buy another one in your life!
Storage Solution Nº2
Cosmetics and Medicine
The most common place we keep our cosmetics and medicines is in the bathroom. Unfortunately, that usually poorly ventilated room, which becomes hot and steamy on a regular basis, isn’t doing them any favours. In addition, the mirrored cabinet which is a prime storage place for the likes of delicate cosmetics and vital medication usually has vanity lights. These only add to the constant heat source messing with the contents of each jar or bottle. The problem with heat, light and moisture, is it damages the preservatives added to keep cosmetics microbe-free and long-lasting. It can also cause medicine to become less potent, which the US National Library of Medicine warns. For a better place to keep these items, dedicate a shelf or drawer in a cool, dark dresser or cupboard. You’ll also benefit from more space in the bathroom.
Storage Solution Nº3
Wine is fine any time of year, but how do you store it once it’s opened? If your bottle has a cork, store the wine on it’s side to keep the cork moist. That might seem totally weird, but it works! This will keep the cork from drying out, letting air in, and spoiling the bottle. If you have a wine rack this already does the job for you, just make sure it’s in a cool spot that doesn’t get direct sunlight. Another common place to store wine is on top of the fridge where it’s nicely out of reach but also easily accessible. The problem here is that the fridge/freezer’s motor emits almost all of it’s heat from there, and it’s not ideal to keep your wine warm!
Storage Solution Nº4
One of the best ways to create space each season, is by storing the items of clothing you know you’re not going to be wearing. However, we often tend to store clothes in air-tight containers such as plastic boxes and plastic bags. This is what will cause that awful musky smell once you’re ready to get your clothes out again, and then you find that you annoyingly have to wash everything that you know was clean when you stored it. To prevent this, simply place clothes in a breathable container like a canvas bag with a zipper. You want to keep dust and pests at bay but keep the airflow to prevent moisture becoming trapped and your clothes from yellowing.
When you know certain clothes are going to be stored for a while, consider making a moth-repellant and antibacterial sachet with essential oils. This will also help destroy any odours trying to build up and cling to clothing. The easiest way to make these sachets is by soaking some cotton pads or balls in tequila, or rubbing alcohol, and then adding 3-5 drops per pad of your favourite essential oils. Encase the coated cotton in perforated ring bags and store alongside clothing or linens. Rosemary, lavender and lemon are all great odour-fighters, but you can really combine any desired aromas as all essential oils have properties that will do the trick here.
