Change is power. Switching up daily routines by trying new things is not only extremely refreshing for the body, but stimulating for the mind too. Tweaking your usual habits is the perfect way to spark inspiration and expose yourself to new sensations, thoughts and experiences. For convenience and security, most of us create specific routines surrounding work and other areas of life which stay on repeat for long periods of time. Sure, this functions pretty well for getting through day-to-day tasks without having to think too much about it. But by introducing new or different steps into what has been the same routine for months, if not years, will coax your brain into thinking more creatively, encouraging brand new connections to form.
”When you’re finished changing, you’re finished” – Benjamin Franklin
Change Tip Nº1
Own who you are, the good and the bad
A lot of us try hard to hide our flaws or “freaky” parts of our personality. A lot of us have been doing so as far back as we can remember. It seems so funny to me, that everyone deals with demons, yet when we bring them to light, it’s almost taboo. If you’ve ever been a victim, or dealt with a mental health issue, or used drugs, or been homeless, or an alcoholic, or had too much sex, or you’re still a virgin, or whatever… just own it. You’re not the only one, you’re not a freak, and that’s the real you, whether past or present you, it’s part of your identity.
This doesn’t mean you should announce your business for the sake of free speech, it just means that once you own your choices, and all the events that led up to who you are in this moment, then the more at peace you will be with yourself. This could mean simply having an ongoing internal dialogue with yourself, or coming out to a family member, or grabbing moments to have private discussions with your partner, where you open up and just own stuff. Your stuff. There is nothing more refreshing, or liberating, or life changing than pure, innocent honesty.
”To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often” – Winston Churchill
Change Tip Nº2
Party from a different perspective
There’s nothing quite like a little buzz, but imagine partying, or dining, or celebrating whilst completely uninhibited? If you happen to dislike alcohol or simply make a point to avoid it in general, then you’re likely already experienced it in a no-buzz lifestyle. Most of the people I’ve encountered who stay away from alcohol actually find they have a better time “going out” when totally sober (or high on life).
Celebrating alcohol-free means you remember in clarity the details of the previous night or social event, never having to deal with a hangover or grogginess the next morning, never worried about saying the wrong thing or acting out of character and never concerned with being in a vulnerable position. Just for a change, enjoy an evening free from alcohol-induced epiphanies or character changes or silly decisions. The best part about it though, is the confidence you gain each time you brave social situations without that “liquid courage” everyone else is consuming.
I think everybody should challenge themselves to attend a strongly alcoholic event (like a wedding, or dinner party), without actually drinking. Keep note of how you’re feeling that evening and the days thereafter. Maybe you don’t need drink to have a good time after all!
“They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” – Andy Warhol
Change Tip Nº3
Wake up and change up your makeup
If you never touch makeup and don’t intend on doing so any time soon, then you can skip this one. For those of us who tend to add some ‘oomph’ to our morning get-ready routines, all-natural makeup is the way forward. Change to natural, eco-friendly, cruelty-free, good-for-you skin care brands. It will not only be a blessing to your skin, the animals, and the environment, but will help support companies that care about these things and work hard to make them a reality.
Elate Cosmetics is a great example of a brand that truly cares about their product, their customers, and the planet. Completely clean up and change your beauty routine by adjusting your makeup ritual to flatter your features whilst feeling good about the products you’re using.
If you’re on the market for a bit more variation, another great brand is Alima Pure. They supply cosmetics that are luxurious, high-performance, and made from only the purest natural ingredients. If you tend to veer into heavier-wear makeup looks, then this brand is probably more up your alley. For some added variation in your normal routine, try changing eyeshadow colour, adding a little gloss or glitter shine, or wearing a shade that you’ve always wanted to try out, but never dared. Life’s too short not to experiment!
