The Little Emerald Wonder – Chlorella
by Carmen Schurt
This dissertation in based on my research, knowledge and experience of more than 20 years working as a holistic dental surgeon. I myself was poisoned with mercury fillings and took Chlorella to detoxify my body successfully from its side effects. Whilst working as a mercury free dentist and holistic functional orthodontist I always recommended it to all my patients who want to undergo a cleansing programme.
Now, working as a Naturopath, Chlorella still plays an important role when it comes to detoxification, diet and nutrition.
Chlorella is a single-celled freshwater micro-algae recognised as one of the most potent nutritional whole foods. Each chlorella cell is a self-sufficient organism carrying all the plant’s functions in itself which results in an exceptional concentration of important nutrients.
This little plant contains the highest quantity of chlorophyll ever known. Chlorophyll is the plant’s green-blood and has a structure similar to haemoglobin, our body’s red blood cells. Chlorophyll carries oxygen around our body’s blood stream and increases the red blood cell count. It also cleanses and purifies the blood, liver, kidneys and bowel. Complementary therapists and scientists have long recognised the importance of chlorophyll in our diet as a bowel cleansing factor, a natural deodorant, and externally improving wound healing.
There are many green foods which are good sources of chlorophyll, but the latest laboratory tests have shown that Chlorella has more than five times more chlorophyll per serving than wheat grass, and ten times more than alfalfa and barley.
There is nothing as good as chlorophyll to cleanse and detoxify the body. People following a diet high in processed, animal and junk food are in desperate need of detoxifying and cleansing.
Chlorella’s fibrous material of the outer shell actually helps remove heavy metals from the body which have been accumulated due to the ingestion of contaminated food products. It is known that heavy metals such as mercury and many others are found in animal products and in non-organic foods and crops. People eating refined foods undoubtedly have PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) cadmium, arsenic, lead, mercury, and other contaminants in their body.
Mercury fillings are a common source of contaminants used in dental surgeries. These fillings are also called ‘silver-fillings’ which is not untrue, since they really contain a bit of silver powder among others, but it is mixed up with ‘pure mercury’, one of the most potent nerve toxins. These mercury fillings emit a constant stream of mercury vapour which gets absorbed into your body. Very often small parts of these mercury fillings crack and are swallowed with the food. Almost all dental patients in the UK and other countries are subjected to routine mercury poisoning every time they get a ‘silver filling’.
Chlorella can help protect you against dental mercury poisoning by bringing it out of the body before it can cause any harm. If you decide to have the mercury fillings removed, be aware that the process of drilling them out results in mercury exposure in your body. The removal of those fillings needs to be made with a rubber dam protecting your oral cavity
from swallowing the particles and the help of a powerful suction and disposal system which, unfortunately, is not very common in most dental practices. Taking Chlorella before every procedure offers good protection against the vapours and bits of filling you eventually may inhale or swallow during its removal process.
There is probably no need to say that one should avoid the silver mercury fillings at all and that preventative methods are the only way to avoid tooth decay.
Essential Fatty Acids – GLA
Essential Fatty Acids such as GLA (Gamma Linoleic Acid) are not produced within the body and must be obtained through the diet. Our body uses fatty acids to build cellular membranes and as lipids mediator it helps to convert into prostaglandins which regulate the levels of cholesterol in the blood and also control blood pressure. Fish, mainly those native to colder waters are rich in Omega- 3 and were thought to be the most important source of essential fatty acids.
Chlorella, however contains a grater quantity of fatty acids then any other algae and this is probably the reason why Chlorella has been shown to be very effective for cardiovascular diseases with anti-inflammatory effects, therefore reducing blood clotting, lowering cholesterol, and blood pressure.
Studies have shown the consumption of nuts to have a link with longevity. A major study of 26,000 members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, in the US, showed that those that ate almonds, peanuts and walnuts at least six times a week had an average lifespan seven years longer than the general population.
Weight Loss and Dieting
The rising rates of obesity in the UK are alarming and a matter of great concern. In all developed countries people are obese and absolutely malnourished. Nearly everybody is deficient in vitamins, minerals and omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids.
Obesity is not only the result of over-indulgency and excess of calories but the result of a dysfunctional endocrine system which produces an excess of insulin increasing cravings for refined foods. The person is hooked on a cycle of craving and eating which is very difficult to stop because what they are eating don’t nourish their body with vitamins and minerals it really needs.
Once the body is supplied with the right nutrients those cravings can be strongly reduced bringing the endocrine system back to a state of normality. Chlorella provides all the essential nutrients the body needs and added to a healthy weight loss diet it can really help people loose weight more effectively.
Juicing – One of the Lost Secrets of Rejuvenation
Of all the nutritive substances we know about, we can find the following in Chlorella:
- Protein; chlorella is 58% protein and more digestible than animal protein
- Vitamin B complex, including vitamin B12
- Vitamin C and E
- Macro minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc and others
- Trace minerals
- Nucleic acids (RNA and DNA)
- Omega-3 fatty acids including GLA
- Mucopolysacharides which are long chains of sugar molecules that are found throughout the body, often in mucus and in fluid around the joints
Chlorella for Diabetes and Hypoglycaemia
Chlorella has great benefits when it comes to blood sugar controlling which is relevant for diabetes and hypoglycaemia. This is due to the fact that these little algae have an almost perfect ratio of proteins and carbohydrates.
These proteins and carbohydrates nourish the body with a steady energy flow without promoting the secretion of insulin. Therefore, many people are using it as an appetite suppressant helping to dissipate extreme carbohydrate cravings.
The nucleic acids in the human body are responsible for directing growth, repair and cellular renewal and its amount decreases with age. Insufficient nucleic acid causes premature ageing and a weakened immune system. Nucleic acid is also depleted by lack of exercise, pollution, stress and poor diet.
Chlorella has a real nucleus and being an evolved organism amongst other common algae, it offers a superior quality of nucleic acid which can replenish the body’s RNA/DNA.
Intestinal Health and Vitality
Chlorella has been shown to be very effective for people with anaemia, weak digestive absorption, poor spleen function or other devitalizing disorders.
Over time chlorella builds vitality, improves digestion, improves mental clarity and enhances energy by rebuilding the strength of organs and tissues.
Chlorella offers considerable help in the area of intestinal health by supporting the intestinal flora known as the friendly bacteria in the digestive system, supporting digestion and protecting it from disease.
Chlorella and Health Benefits
Anaemia-Chlorophyll stimulates the production of red blood cells and is effective against anaemia
Anti-aging –Chlorella contains powerful anti-oxidants and also has great amounts of RNA (ribonucleic acid) and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), both associated with ant-aging processes
Arthritis – Because chlorella is very alkaline, it helps to neutralize the body’s pH, which is frequently too acidic as a result of consuming too many junk and processed foods, and fizzy drinks. Arthritis is a condition associated with an acidic constitution. Chlorella also contains selenium, and vitamins A, C and E which together help combat arthritis. Chlorella’s outer cell wall contains glucosamine, which provides ongoing renewal for, ligaments, tendons and cartilage
Alzheimer – One of the causes of Alzheimer’s disease is thought to be aluminium present in cooking utensils and deodorants. Regular long term use of chlorella cleanses the system from such heavy metals. A greater supply of oxygen to the brain promotes more alertness and mental function in Alzheimer’s’ patients and those suffering from dementia and other mental disorders
Cancer – Chlorella contains beta-carotene, which has been shown to destroy cancer cells. It also provides antioxidant vitamins C and E and selenium. Chlorella increases levels of interferon, one of the body’s greatest natural cancer defences
Cardiovascular health – The chlorophyll cells found in Chlorella have magnesium being this mineral essential for the heart function. Chlorella is also a good source of Omega-3 oil, known to protect against heart disease.
Digestion – Chlorella contains digestive enzymes. It also causes the friendly lactic bacteria in the intestine to multiply at five times more than usual, therefore improving digestion and the absorption of nutrients. The fibre-like rather indigestible outer shell acts as a peristalsis stimulant. Chlorella also strengthens the intestine, promotes bowel movements, and relieves chronic constipation
Detoxification – The not digestible outer shell of chlorella binds with heavy metals and other toxins in the body removing them. The cleansing of the liver, bowels and blood starts after chlorella has been taken regularly for at least 3/4 months
Promotes growth in children – Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete hormones for growth. This Growth Factor is unique to chlorella and also promotes healing and replacement of cell tissue
Wound healing – The high amount of chlorophyll accelerates wound and burn healing when applied topically. Chlorella also promotes the healing of diabetic skin ulcers, which can lead to amputation in case they become infected. This healing process is thought to be due to an increased production of Tumour Necrosis Factor, TNF, which promotes fibroblasts to repair wounds. Taking chlorella on a regular basis over a long period of time will increase the body’s ability to heal itself of cuts, rashes and even more serious wounds with no need to apply it externally
How to take Chlorella
The following recommended doses are based on an average adult weighting about 70kg.
Maintenance dose: – 3 grams per day.
With this dose you will not notice significant changes but your body will get all the nutrients it needs such as protein, minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and enzymes.
Disease-fighting dose: – 5/8 grams per day.
It is advisable to introduce Chlorella into the diet gradually, monitoring the stools. Chlorella can result in mild diarrhoea in some people but the body will adapt to it in a few weeks.
How soon will Chlorella work?
Everyone who takes chlorella expects an immediate result. In some people the effects can be felt immediately but normally it takes between 3/6 months to get noticeable improvements in your health.
